What is Cryolipolysis and how exactly does it work?
Cryolipolysis, sometimes called Fat Freezing or Body Sculpting, uses advanced cooling technology to destroy fat cells in a non-invasive way by freezing the fat cells which then crystallise and are flushed out of the body as part of the body’s natural cycle. It is a non-invasive, non-surgical, clinically proven treatment that delivers fast and long-lasting fat reduction results. Cryolipolysis delivers a smooth sculpted body shape.
The treatment is often seen as a non-surgical, more cost effective alternative to the invasive surgical treatment liposuction.
Treatment is carried out with a state of the art electronic machine attached to the body with a clip that is painless and does not adversely affect the skin. There are different sized heads for different parts of the body. After analysing the dimensions and curvature of the target bulge, an applicator is selected that matches the area. our consultant will place a cool gel pad over the area to help protect the skin. A vacuum is then attached to the area and you will experience a mild cold sensation and the temperature will drop to around -7 or -8 degrees Celsius, freezing the fat cells. The freezing will kill off the desired fat cell but will not adversely affect the skin or cells in the area.
The area targeted is cooled to the temperature needed to freeze and crystallise the fat cells and with a process known scientifically as Apoptosis, is then evacuated from the body as part of the body’s natural functions. The time it takes for the fat to be flushed out of the body through normal body processes varies from one person to the next depending on the amount of fat and water intake of the individual.
Each session usually removes 20/25% of the fat cells in the treated area. This does not always result in weight loss on the scales but as well as seeing immediate results you should notice a visible difference and a sculpting effect over time. In most cases you may only need one session but depending on your results and desired look you can choose to have additional sessions in the coming months, our consultant will be happy to discuss this will you during your appointment.
The most asked question about fat freezing, apart from does it hurt is, where does the fat go?! When the fat cells are frozen and killed during a LA Lipo treatment they are then cleaned up by your body’s own immune cells and ultimately eliminated from your body through urine. These cells are totally eliminated, never to return unlike with weight loss through diet and exercise where fat cells shrink and can grow back to their original size and bigger.
How It Works
When you diet and lose weight the fat cells shrink but they are still present and will grow again if your lifestyle changes or returns. So losing weight just changes the size of the fat cells.
Cryolipolysis is a different process to weight loss, the fat is eliminated and dissolved through the body over the following 3-12 weeks post-treatment. The effectiveness of cryolipolysis has been clinically proven to be permanent. Freezing through cryolipolysis will kill the treated fat cells, once they are gone they are gone for good! The goal of cryolipolysis is to reduce the volume of fat in a fatty bulge. Some patients may opt to have more than one area treated or to retreat an area more than once. Areas that are not treated don’t change and are completely unaffected.
While Cryolipolysis can be very beneficial for people who are overweight, it is not the treatment of choice for people who have a lot of weight to lose or are obese because it is designed to target stubborn fat pockets that are difficult to shift with diet and exercise alone. While Cryolipolysis is not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise, it can help reduce the appearance of unwanted fat deposits or bulges in some individuals. Cryolipolysis is not a treatment for Cellulite and it is not a treatment for obesity or people that are generally overweight. If you struggle to keep the weight off this won’t be the magic wand you hope for, we can however help with weight management, which we would look to explore first. Then when are near your goal weight we can address those stubborn areas.
Cryolipolysis is not suitable for individuals with cold-related conditions such as cryoglobulinemia, cold urticaris and paroxysmal cold hemoglobulinuria; people with these conditions should not have cryolipolysis. Patients with loose skin or poor tone may also not be suitable candidates for the procedure.

People often ask if after treatment can the fat grow back. This is an important question for those wondering how long your LA Lipo treatment will last. No, the fat will not come back, it has been killed off in the freezing process and the body cannot create more fat cells to replace those eliminated via the Cryolipoysis treatment.
If you put on weight after your Cryolipolysis treatment the fat will not be in the areas you have had treated, however the remaining fat cells in the body will expand.
When we are younger we have good skin elasticity, but our skin’s ability to grow and shrink starts to decline as we get older. However, with Cyrolipolysis the will contract slowly as the fat cells gradually disappear after the treatment. This reduces the possibility of sagging skin.
Cryolipolysis is proven to be a highly effective method to permanently remove 20-25% of stubborn fat cells in the treated area. It is safe, non-invasive and requires no down time. You can have yup to 4 areas treated at the same time and your consultant will talk you through the best way to achieve the results you are seeking.
